History

Our history is Australia's history.

Australia was a very different place in 1926, when Manuel Hornibrook founded his construction company in Brisbane. The country had a total population of only six million people and its major exports were primary products.

The company quickly gained a reputation as a bridge builder, with Brisbane's William Jolly Bridge and the Story Bridge among its early major achievements. Meanwhile, it was also diversifying into other work and other states with ongoing contracts for educational facilities, mining activities and power projects in Queensland, New South Wales and the ACT.

Hornibrook's crowning glory came in the 1970s, however, with the construction of the Sydney Opera House, with its soaring 'sail like' roof and incredible angled windows breaking through the boundaries of traditional construction, and its team of engineers receiving high praise from its designer, Danish architect Jorn Utzon.

Meanwhile, in South Australia, Bert Baulderstone's construction company, founded in 1946, was also developing a strong reputation for innovation, quality and performance. Although initially working in the education and health sectors, it quickly established its status as a leader in bridge building and rail infrastructure.

By the 1980s Baulderstone was attracting international attention and, in 1984, French construction giant Societe Auxiliaire d'Entreprises (one of the builders of the engineering marvel, the Channel Tunnel) became a major shareholder in AW Baulderstone. This helped elevate the company into a new era of growth and development. During this period it broadened its scope of activities and received industry accolades for the construction of a new oil refinery at Port Stanvac.

The merger of the two companies in 1985 resulted in the creation of Baulderstone Hornibrook, and an expansion of its operations overseas into New Zealand, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and China.

Eight years later, in 1993, the company was acquired by one of the world's largest construction companies, Bilfinger Berger SE.

In March 2011, Baulderstone joined Lend Lease, after Bilfinger Berger SE completed the sale of its Australian operations to Lend Lease. As part of a leading international property and infrastructure group, Baulderstone continues to create what matters to our clients and the communities we serve.
