Baulderstone and Bilfinger Berger, along with consortium partner Jan de Nul NV, have signed the design and construct contract to deliver the Port Botany expansion for Sydney Ports Corporation. The major expansion will include infrastructure for a new five-berth container terminal, to provide 1850 metres of extra berth length through reclamation of about 60 hectares of land. The accepted design requires approximately two hundred precast concrete wall sections to be manufactured. The individual wall segments weigh approximately 550 tonnes and will be installed by a purpose built shear-leg-crane barge. Each segment is 21 metres high by nine metres wide with double buttress walls. Baulderstone will be supported in the critically important area of foundation engineering with expertise from Bilfinger Berger Civil. Jan de Nul NV will be mobilising a large cutter suction dredge and a back-hoe dredge that can excavate 30 metres below sea level. The design team includes Hyder Consulting, Golder Associates and marine specialists, Scott Wilson from Hong Kong.
Enhancement of Penrhyn Estuary, the upgrade of Foreshore Beach and a new boat ramp and public facilities are included in the project.
Penrhyn Estuary enhancement works include the expansion of the saltmarsh habitat to provide additional bird habitat and help attract migratory birds. The seagrass habitat will also be increased to attract additional sh and marine life. The careful monitoring and management of environmental considerations is paramount to the success of the project. A Community Consultative Committee has been established to work with Sydney Ports Corporation and BHJDN to deliver the project.
