As the largest TAFE college in South Australia, the facilities of the Adelaide Institute of Training and Further Education were under increasing pressure at their location in Adelaide’s CBD. In order to extend the space and cater for future growth, a new five storey building, and substantial refurbishment of one of the existing buildings were undertaken by Baulderstone.
The new building was a purposed designed development, incorporating teaching areas, computer suites, a lecture theatre, training kitchen, wine education room and restaurant. Various parts of the new structure link into the existing CBD campus, and all services were designed to optimise energy usage.
The 4 separate stages of refurbishment involved in this project had the potential to be extremely disruptive and cause a significant drop in the productivity of the fully operational education facility. However, liaison between TAFE staff and the construction management team, ensured this work was completed with minimal staff discomfort and acrimony. Teaching in the new building was able to commence one month early, actually resulting in an increase in the TAFE facility’s productivity.
Baulderstone’s sensitivity and common sense approach to cost control led to the modification of the project to achieve two significant physical assets that were not in the original scope of work without altering the overall project budget. The additions included a space buffer on level 5 of the new building, allowing for future tenancies.
