A highly sophisticated laboratory facility for industry and government was completed in Melbourne in 1991 under challenging circumstances. Baulderstone planned the construction and fit-out program to enable scientists to occupy the building ahead of program – the laboratories were to be used for the scientific and chemical analysis of materials, soil, liquids and sediments.
During construction, Baulderstone needed to overcome difficulties gaining access into the finished shell with equipment and materials. Similar issues arose with the installation of the complicated exhaust system from the laboratories by roof stacks.
The first stage of the project involved the construction management of a three storey reinforced concrete building. The following stage included a fit-out of the base building with all necessary services and sophisticated ventilation and fume cupboards, and a state-of-the-art clean room.
The project was considered a significant achievement given the highly sophisticated technology involved in the fitout.
