The new road provided a link between two of Heidelberg’s busiest roads – Bell and Banksia Streets. Its position in a busy urban environment, created construction challenges which needed careful management, including environmental, community and traffic management issues.
The four lane divided roadway has an additional climbing lane for westbound traffic on the steep section between Studley Road and Bell Street.
One of the interesting features is the structural and architectural aspects of the retaining walls along the cutting. This was the first project in Australia to use soil nailing for a permanent retaining wall. The soil nailing comprised steel bars up to 7m long encased in a polythene sheath and cement grouted.
The visible component of the retaining walls are provided by precast fascia panels, architecturally designed to create movement and energy as the motorist passes through the cutting.
