The Mater Medical Research Laboratory and Library project involved stripping out the top floor of the original Mater Private Hospital known as Aubigny Place, a three storey building built in the early 1900’s with additions added to the rear of the building in the 1940’s and again in the 1980’s.
Demolition involved the removal of structural and non-structural walls and included areas such as theatre, CSSD, administration, wards and staff change rooms.
As both the lower floors were occupied while works were undertaken, particular care was taken when installing drainage in the ceiling space of the floor immediately below. Due to open and effective communication amongst all parties, this was achieved with relative ease and areas were vacated systematically with no effect to the construction programme.
The completed facility consists of six laboratories, two tissue culture rooms, an isotopic room, two cool rooms, one -20°C room, a freezer equipment room, store, administration and kitchen facilities.
The Library at the Mater Hospital was constructed on the ground floor of the same building as the Medical Research Institute. Similarly it involved the demolition of a number of walls in areas such as the old kitchen of the original private hospital and administration areas. When completed the hospital was able to combine a number of existing smaller libraries into one open plan area.
