With its gracefully tapered towers supporting a slender bridge deck by fine, bluesheathed multi-strand cables, the elegance of Vietnam’s new My Thuan Bridge disguises its strength. For despite its apparent lightness, the 1.5 kilometre cablestayed bridge has been designed and built to withstand ship impacts as well as the region’s severe monsoons and volatile seismic conditions.
Located around 125 kilometres south of Ho Chi Minh City, the My Thuan Bridge provides a crucial link in National Highway No. 1, Southern Vietnam’s most important transport route. Crossing the Tien Giang River, a branch of the mighty Mekong, the bridge provides a high level road crossing with four traffic lanes and two pedestrian footways. Overall length of the bridge structure is 1,560m, with the main span being the largest in the country. The first cable-stayed bridge in Vietnam, it was built by the balanced-cantilever method.
The main cable-stayed structure over the river is 660m long with a 350m central span, side spans of 150m and a navigational clearance of 37.5m. The 23.66m wide in situ concrete superstructure is supported by 64 stay cables from each tower, with anchorage points located at 10.4 m centres along both edges of the deck. The 120m high towers have a modified “H” frame configuration in order to maintain the cables in vertical planes.
All major construction plant had to be sourced from outside the country, as plant associated with this type of construction is not common in Vietnam. Baulderstone sourced, acquired and imported all the plant required for the project. The My Thuan Bridge was completed in 34 months, eight months ahead of the original tendered date and under budget even with additional works.
