This $118 million upgrade and renovation project turned the National Gallery of Victoria into one of Melbourne’s major landmarks. The distinctive new water wall at the front entrance forms a centrepiece of this development and leads to the gallery’s main foyer, Lindsey Court. This sculptural court is protected by a glass roof and acts as an access point to the gallery’s visiting and permanent collections.
The development also includes a new exit and a series of ground-floor exhibition galleries for major touring exhibitions. The exit runs from the middle of the Great Hall to Grimwade Gardens. Two new lecture theatres were built for the gallery complete with high-tech audiovisual equipment – a 285-seat theatre on the ground floor and 100-seat theatre on the first floor. The exhibition spaces for the permanent collection were increased and upgraded, along with three levels of floor space in the Murdoch and Coles Courts and new and upgraded education facilities.
The Gallery Shop, a new 180-seat café and multimedia browsing facility were incorporated into a new retail area.
