Located in the tourist destination of Broadbeach on the Gold Coast, Pacific Fair is one of the largest regional shopping centres in Queensland. Originally built in 1977 and substantially refurbished and extended in 1993, Pacific Fair has become extremely successful as both a commercial development and a tourist icon. The Stage 3 extension was based around a second major department store – Daimaru.
Working in a fully operational centre is always challenging. Baulderstone’s success in this area on previous projects provided the necessary knowledge and expertise to ensure a successful outcome on AMP’s new project.
Appointed as Main Contractor in August 1997, Baulderstone was responsible for the construction of the complete project and coordination of the specialist Daimaru shop fitout.
The main structure consists of one basement carpark level, two levels of retail / storage and two levels of carparking above. The new store offers 15,000 sqm of retail floor area. Baulderstone’s contract ranged from demolition to civil works and landscaping.
Careful programming and staging of the work was required to maintain access to the centre. Baulderstone ensured that there was no disruption to access for the existing retailers operating seven days a week and that detectable noise and vibration by the shopping public during trading hours was eliminated.
Baulderstone’s ability to perform on a logistically challenging project such as this, is a reflection of the combined effort with all team members and especially with AMP and Daimaru and their consultants, to achieve the objectives of all parties involved.
