Pindari Dam in the north of NSW provides irrigation water to the extensive agricultural areas of the region, much of which is used for cotton production. The dam is located on the Severn River approximately 58km to the north of Inverell. Baulderstone undertook the project to enlarge the dam in joint venture with Roche Bros. The project involved raising the existing embankment by 40m and constructing a new embankment in the old spillway. A new spillway was excavated from the western side of the dam and provided rockfill for the raised embankment.
The new outlet works included a 55m high outlet tower accessed by a 72 m long bridge, an outlet tunnel beneath the dam wall along with a valve block and dissipator chambers. Ancillary works included two smaller saddle dams, 4km of roadworks and extension of the existing outlet works. A feature of the construction was the concrete screed developed to pour the facing slabs in 18m wide x full height segments. The screed proved highly successful and produced a high quality finished concrete surface.
