More
This project includes the renovation and construction of new infrastructure and buildings in the 5th Aviation Regiment precinct. The purpose for this infrastructure is to support the maintenance and storage of aircraft, the training of Defence personnel and ancillary support services.
Scope includes extension and refurbishment of the Technical Support Troop facility, upgrade of ALSE workshop, a new store building and modifications to squadron shelters, fitout of Mission Planning Facility and preparation of site for new Simulator building. The works also include the upgrade of a HV ring main serving the 5th Aviation Regiment.
Baulderstone worked with the Townsville Airport Authority to create and implement an 'Airside Awareness Plan' and an 'Airside Method of Works Plan' due to the close proximity of the works to the taxiways of both the RAAF Base and Townsville International Airport. This was managed by having direct contact with Townsville Airport Authority who provided escorts and contact with Air traffic control to ensure all aircraft movements were not affected by Baulderstone's airside works
The project was constructed on reclaimed land, which was once a flood prone area, meaning there was potential for acid sulphate soil deposits. The Baulderstone team implemented a methodology for the on-site testing of potential acid sulphate soils, to ensure this risk was addressed.
The facilities were completed over 4 stages, with the last stage completed in October 2009, six weeks ahead of program. Further to this Baulderstone has been awarded a major variation for the upgrade of the fire mains.
