Robina Town Centre forms the heart of the $2.5 billion master planned Robina City Centre which includes retail, residential, commercial, recreational and community facilities. The concept was the establishment of a traditional town centre with a series of pedestrian streets, courtyards, plazas and terraces stepping up the hillside from a man made lake to form two main shopping levels and a waterfront restaurant precinct.
With a site area of 26 hectares, leasing space of 135,000m² and gross floor area of 186,000m², this massive project comprises a major department store, four discount department stores, approximately 270 specialty shops, a cinema, town square, 180m diameter lake and parking for 6,000 cars.
The enormity of the project resulted in its dissection into three distinct construction zones and the amount of work completed between January 1995 and April 1996 set a new record for any project in Southeast Queensland. Labour peaked at 1,200 tradespeople and labourers together with 150 supervisory staff, while construction turnover reached $17.5 million in October 1995 and totalled $150 million for the year. Construction was undertaken via a ‘fast track’ process allowing work to commence as documentation progressed.
Completion was achieved almost two months ahead of the contractual date and final accounts were agreed with the client just six weeks after practical completion. This unique centre is capable of combining the usually independent activities of shopping, dining, entertainment and community involvement for the rapidly expanding population of Queensland’s Gold Coast.
