More
This major freeway project, for the Department of Main Roads, W.A., commenced in November 1992 and was completed 71/2 weeks ahead of schedule in July 1994. The work included 4 lanes of pavement over a 2.6km section of freeway with 2.2km of on/off ramps and two major bridge structures. Bridge 1345 crosses Tonkin Highway, a busy freeway and Bridge 1147 crosses the railway line. Minimum disruption to road and rail traffic was an important element of the project. The works also included 2 large compensating basins, ramps, minor roads, kerbing, drainage and hydromulching.
Innovative geotechnical techniques were used to advantage on the project. Vibroflotation was used to compact the sand and hence to improve the bearing capacity of the foundations for the Bridge 1345.
Soil Nailing was used to provide temporary retaining walls between two railway lines to enable construction of Bridge 1147 pier footings.
Subsequent to practical completion, Baulderstone was asked to carry out extra works including guardrailling, drainage and batter stabilisation – testimony to the client’s satisfaction with Baulderstone’s service.
