The Runway End Safety Area (RESA) is a 90m x 90m paved area mandated by changes to CASA operational requirements. The RESA itself is aircraft strength pavement formed on a series of landbridges spanning the M5 East Tunnel, the heritage listed SWSOOS (Southern and Western Sydney Ocean Outfall Sewer) and the existing airport perimeter road.
The airport perimeter road will be realigned and widened changing from an existing surface road into a tunnel that will run between the SWSOOS and the M5 East Tunnel.
This structure will be constructed similarly to a cut and cover tunnel with open trough sections at each end. Associated works will include temporary shoring and jet-grouting, construction of flexible pavement, line-marking, signage, drainage and flooding pump-out, lighting, electrical and fire services and retaining walls. The route for the realigned perimeter road necessitates it to pass underneath the SWSOOS. To support the SWSOOS over the road, a bridge structure consisting of a post tensioned slab supported on cast insitu girders and bored piles is to required to be constructed.
