This contract was for the assembly and installation of a semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill at Western Minings Olympic Dam mine site. The work was associated with an upgrading of process capacity at the mine which is a major producer of copper and uranium. With a diameter of 10 metres, the mill was the largest of its type ever installed in Australia.

This contract was for the assembly and installation of a semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill at Western Mining’s Olympic Dam mine site. The work was associated with an upgrading of process capacity at the mine which is a major producer of copper and uranium. With a diameter of 10 metres, the mill was the largest of its type ever installed in Australia.
Baulderstone’s responsibilities included taking delivery of the mill, completion of all installation works and assisting with commissioning. Ancillary mechanical equipment installed by Baulderstone included the drive motor, gearboxes and couplings. The scope of work also included installation of the lubricating system which required extensive on-site pipe fabrication work. The project featured large radius heavy lifts in excess of 100 tonnes using a Manitowic Ringer crane.
