International electronics, computing and communications giant Siemens occupied the first building on the five hectare Macquarie University Research Park, which is being jointly developed by the university and Baulderstone. Located on a 10,000m2 site, the building has two wings of four above ground and two basement parking levels. It brings together Siemens Ltd, Siemens Nixdorf and Siemens GEC, allowing the group to consolidate and expand its NSW offices.
The building's design responds to very specific corporate guidelines and has a high-technology appearance in keeping with the firm's image and products. It has a smooth facade of silver-painted metal panels together with green glazing, with the central services/circulation drum being the dominant feature. As well as defining a powerful, identifiable entrance to the building, the drum allows the two wings to provide the most flexible floor space.
Gross floor area is 10,565m2, with nett lettable office space of 8750m2. A 450m2 warehouse is located in the basement area, together with 316 carspaces. A further 83 exterior carspaces are provided.
A lightweight aluminium 'Peri' formwork system was selected because of its flexibility and productivity advantages to meet Siemens' time constraints. Construction is of post-tensioned concrete floors with a conventional reinforced concrete frame on a 7.2m x 8.4m grid, together with a metal deck roof.
