The landmark, eleven-storey Sir Robert Menzies Building was constructed in the early 1960s and is subject to a heritage overlay. It is the original and largest building at Monash University's Clayton Campus and upon completion was considered to be an excellent example of 'cutting edge' architecture and construction.
In 2009 Baulderstone was appointed as Managing Contract to deliver the redevelopment project.
The redevelopment focused on the upgrade of vertical transportation, which included the installation of seven new lifts, three stairs structures and associated services to the building. The project also addressed the removal of the building's existing escalators, upgrade of the ground floor foyer space, remediation works to the decaying façade; and strengthening of the existing building to create open plan common spaces.
The building accommodates 900 staff and provides teaching space for 2,600 students all of whom have remained in the building while each of the eleven floors was redeveloped. To manage the works in an occupied facility the project team planned for and implemented strategies to manage pedestrian movements around construction works; maintain safe working environments; eliminate noise from major demolition; maintain existing live services; and create work methods for the safe removal of asbestos.
The handover of the Lift Annex Building occurred in February 2011 on schedule, adding four new lifts in an adjacent building for staff and students. Other lifts and staircases were progressively added together with a new retail outlet on the ground floor, breakout rooms, student and staff toilets, and staff kitchens. Baulderstone had workfaces on all 12 floors of the building which continued to function as one of the University's primary teaching spaces throughout the building works.
