Baulderstone has recently been awarded the contract for the construction of the Advanced Manufacturing Centre project at Swinburne University's Hawthorn campus.
The Advanced Manufacturing Centre will be a 'centre of excellence' in manufacturing innovation and collaborative learning that embraces state-of-the-art design, reflecting its reputation as a leading research institute with strong technology and business connections.
The Advanced Manufacturing Centre is a new research and teaching centre comprising 'Factory of the Future', research laboratories, academic and administrative offices, auditorium and office suites and student amenities. The new building will have a gross floor area of 16,700 m2 over eleven storeys with associated basement parking and restoration of the existing Burwood Road and John Street facades.
The bold design will be a landmark for the university comprising a six storey block floating above a retained Victorian façade at street level. Sculpted vertical fins, inspired by engine turbine blades, are modelled to achieve optimum solar shading while achieving transparency and a three-dimensional shape to the outer skin of the building.
The superstructure is fairly complex and incorporates insitu coffered slabs, hanging beams over a vast auditorium hall and insitu architectural concrete truss columns. The entire façade is clad with coloured GRC panels outside the glass curtain wall panels.
The works will be undertaken within a fully functioning university campus whose operations must be maintained with minimal disturbance. Baulderstone will be working closely with the University to maintain its operations.
The project is expected to be completed in December 2013.
