Tarago Water Treatment Plant is a new 70 ML/day water treatment facility delivered by Joint Venture between Baulderstone and United Group Infrastructure in partnership with Melbourne Water. The project will reconnect Tarago Reservoir's water supply to the South East of Greater Melbourne, supplying an additional 15 billion litres of drinking water a year to Melbourne Water customers. It is the first stage in the state government's planned $4.9 billion infrastructure upgrade for Victoria's water supply.
To respond with urgency to Victoria's worst drought and the threat of climate change, the project was delivered in a collaborative manner to fast track construction of the project. Simultaneous design, procurement, pricing and construction of the project ensuring the majority of
construction occurred within a 12-month period.
Examples of best practice engineering include the innovative use of materials which ensured the 20ML, 72m diameter treated water storage tank was constructed at approximately 25% of the time and at 50% of the cost required for tanks typically used by Melbourne Water.
With no permanent electricity connected for the first 12 months of the project, biodiesel fuel was implemented for all site generators as part of efforts to achieve a zero carbon footprint for the construction duration.
The project was completed on time and within budget, satisfying all of Melbourne Water's functional requirements.
