More
As part of the Queensland State Government's $60 million cyclone shelter building program, Baulderstone is constructing cyclone shelters at Heatley Secondary College in Townsville and at Ingham State High School.
The $5.4 million Townsville cyclone shelter and the $5.6 million Ingham cyclone shelter are two of 10 cyclone shelters being constructed in North Queensland as part of the program established by the Queensland Government with support from a $30 million donation from the Emirate of Abu Dhabi following the devastating 2011 cyclone season.
The shelters will not only be a place of refuge during cyclones - they will also deliver lasting benefits to the people of Townsville and Ingham as they will be constructed as a multi-purpose facility that can be used year-round by the community.
Designed in accordance with the Design Guidelines for Queensland Public Cyclone Shelters, the shelters will be constructed to be:
-
capable of providing protection from winds up to 300km/h
-
located above storm tide inundation areas and not vulnerable to landslip and creek or river flooding
-
capable of allowing the floor level of the shelter building to be above the storm tide level or a 1-in-500-year defined flood event level
-
located sufficiently away from significant hazards such as: hazardous materials, large trees, power or communications towers and potential sources of large windborne debris.
The new cyclone shelters will be delivered in time for the 2012-13 cyclone season.
