This multi-award winning project more than doubled the size of the international terminal and provided Melbourne with one of the most modern airports in the world–ranking it in the top 10 airports for three consecutive years.
The redevelopment occurred within a full operating terminal, with more than four million arriving and departing passengers. Almost the entire terminal was improved, including a larger, refurbished concourse; a new retail section known as Sky Plaza; and a new building between the international and qantas terminals.
Retail space was initially expanded to 5,230m2, with 45 shops and kiosks, but later included a further three-level satellite structure of almost 15,000m2. A state-of-the-art baggage handling system and a fully-automatic conveyor system were also installed.
The project won an Australian Institute of Building Award for Professional excellence in Building and a Master Builders Association Victoria Award for excellence in Construction and Safety.
