Baulderstone refurbished the 1950s Fairfax Building in Broadway to create a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility for the University of Technology, Sydney.
The completed building accommodates the University Graduate School, Faculties of Education and Information Technology, and the Human Resources, Financial Services and Facilities Management departments. The 1950’s building with eight lower levels and seven tower levels takes up the block surrounded by Jones, Broadway, Wattle and Thomas Streets, with the main building entrance in Jones Street.
The major building works of the redevelopment comprise the creation of a soaring glass enclosed atrium. This involved the removal of a full structural bay of six of the stories of the building podium. Daylight floods into the six floors and onto the granite paved concourse at street level. The space is arranged to enable close visual and physical communication between the faculty areas. Finely detailed steel & timber stairs & bridges link certain areas across the space. The atrium concourse is a vibrant and modern meeting area flanked by shops, a café and faculty activities.
The basement that formerly housed the Fairfax printing presses was almost nine metres high. Baulderstone introduced two new floor slabs with the top slab creating the roof for the basement carpark and ground floor for the atrium hall. The demolition works involved removal of redundant services in order to use more environmentally friendly and energy efficient services. These early works highlighted both Baulderstone and the University’s commitment to environmentally sustainable practices and more than 90% of demolition waste was recycled. This project won the AIB 2003 National Professional Excellence Award and a Sulman Award
